Preliminary Results of the Mariner Iv Occultation Measurement of the Atmosphere of Mars

چکیده
The Mariner IV Occultation Experiment (Ref. 2) has been carried out by investigators from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Stanford University, and CorneU University. Previous knowledge of such atmospheric properties as the surface pressure and density, as well as scale height, has been quite poorly defined. The surface pressure, as deduced from recent spectroscopic observations of weak and strong CO, absorption bands, was thought to lie

Introduction Occultation methods based on effects connected with the refraction of electromagnetic waves in both the optical and radiofrequency domains have been used by astronomers for numerous investigations of planetary atmospheres over the last decades. The first experiment started with the Mars flyby by Mariner-IV in 1964. Since this first attempt, radio-occultation experiments have been c...
متن کاملRadio occultation measurements and MGCM simulations of Kelvin waves on Mars
We have derived new results concerning thermal tides on Mars from a combination of radio occultation measurements and numerical simulations by a Mars General Circulation Model (MGCM). This investigation exploits a set of concurrent observations by Mars Express (MEX) and Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) in mid-2004, when the season on Mars was midspring in the northern hemisphere. The MEX occultations...
متن کاملEvaluation of coalbed methane potential in Parvadeh IV coal deposit in central Iran using a combination of MARS modeling and Kriging
Coalbed methane (CBM) plays an important role in coal mining safety and natural gas production. In this work, The CBM potential of B2 seam in Parvadeh IV coal deposit, in central Iran, was evaluated using a combination of local regression and geostatistical methods. As there were 30 sparse methane sampling points in the Parvadeh IV coal deposit, no valid variogram was achieved for the methane c...
متن کاملMariner IV: Analysis of Preliminary Photographs.
Comparison of the distributions of Martian and lunar crater diameters indicates that the visible surface of Mars is 2.2 to 3 x 10(9) years old. This result implies that in the early history of Mars large-scale subaerial erosion occurred. Of 69 Martian craters with diameters greater than 10 kilometers, 13 percent have central peaks. This compares favorably with the frequency (11.7 percent) of ce...
متن کاملAnalysis, Interpretation, and Modeling of Mars Dayglow Spectra
Introduction: The Mariner 6 and 7 (1969), Mariner 9 (1971), and Viking 1 and 2 (1975) missions provided the first quantitative details about the structure and energetics of the Mars atmosphere [1-8]. These limited data sets supplied the observational foundation for the current semiempirical reference atmospheric models [2, 10-13]. Not until more than 20 years later did new generations of lander...
